The 1977 FA Charity Shield, also known as the FA Community Shield since 2002, was the 55th edition of the annual football match between the winners of the previous season's Football League and FA Cup. The match was contested on 13 August 1977 between Liverpool, the reigning First Division champions, and Manchester United, the FA Cup holders, at Wembley Stadium in London.
The match ended in a 0-0 draw, resulting in a replay four days later at Old Trafford, Manchester. Liverpool won the replay 2-1, with goals from Jimmy Case and Ray Kennedy, while Stuart Pearson scored for Manchester United.
The Charity Shield match is traditionally played before the start of the new football season and is seen as a curtain-raiser for the upcoming campaign. The proceeds from the game are donated to various charities supported by The Football Association.
